We celebrate the horror film 'V/H/S/2' with these classic images

There's been a resurgent interest in VHS horror movies over the last few
years. If you wonder why someone would choose to watch a movie in a videotape
format, especially given the beautiful restorations being done in HD, there are
two key reasons. First off, many of these movies have yet to receive any Blu-ray
or even DVD release. Secondly, the artwork on some of these titles is outrageous
and highly entertaining, and the collectible tapes are now fetching high prices
on eBay. Many of these iconic VHS covers have been replaced with something more
conservative or modern for their DVD/BD reissues, but many horror fiends who
grew up in the '80s remember how fun it was to troll through the back of video
stores looking for the latest, greatest B-movie and being lured in by a graphic
or eye-popping image. Often the packaging was way better than the movies
themselves — who can forget the giant clamshell cases that enveloped certain
tapes? — but they added to the whole experience for impressionable young
viewers. Suggestion is often more powerful than reality.
The new "V/H/S/2" is part of a series of
movies celebrating the era of fear on tape. Here are some classic covers from
that era that remain ingrained in many of our brains.
