These characters overcame obstacles to shine on the big
screen

"The Sessions," a sometimes comic drama that was a
hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is based on the true story of
Mark O'Brien, who became a quadriplegic after he contracted polio as a child.
Occasional NPR contributor O'Brien may have lived most of his life in an iron
lung, but he didn't let that stop him from experiencing as much of life as he
could, and it didn't stop him from sharing those experiences in his prose and
journalistic writings.
And, as "The Sessions" notes, he decided he wanted to experience some of
life's more, ahem, earthy pleasures as well. John Hawkes plays O'Brien, while
Helen Hunt plays a sexual surrogate who helps him in this pursuit and William H.
Macy co-stars as a sympathetic priest.
