Halloween can be horrifying in so many wrong ways: the "sexy Sherlock Holmes" costumes, the pre-Halloween Christmas decoration displays at the Gas-n-Chug, the looped Mannheim Steamroller holiday albums in shopping centers.

But there's one kind of scary we crave: the pleasure of spooky movies. Who doesn't want a racing pulse, sweaty palms and a sudden urge to shriek? When you have a family, though, you have to tread carefully in choosing the right cinematic creepfest.

As some of us learned the hard way when we were kids, there's a fine line between being scared and being scarred for life.
