Director, Producer, First Assistant Director Born: August 9, 1918 in Cranston, RI Death: December 5, 1983 in Los Angeles, CA Biography:An artistic maverick whose reputation in the United States did not match his prestige in Europe, "Robert Aldrich" directed some of Hollywood's more intense examinations of violence, morality, and survival during the 1950s and '60s. Striving for autonomy throughout his career, Aldrich's efforts to maintain his own production company and creative independence were in concert with the New Hollywood's late '60s/early '70s freedom, but his career succumbed to changing tastes and practices by the 1980s.
Scion of a prominent New England family, Aldrich played football and studied economics at the University of Virginia. Rather than enter the family businesses, however, Aldrich preferred movies. Securing a job at RKO through connections, Aldrich headed to Hollywood in 1941.
