Born Marjorie Post, she is the daughter of a nuclear physicist and a poet. She had a comfortable and quiet upbringing in California. Post studied acting while enrolled in Lewis and Clark College. She graduated in 1975 and was briefly married before she found work backstage writing questions for game shows and choosing prizes for The Price Is Right, "Card Sharks", and Family Feud. She was about to be promoted to executive producer when Post decided it was time to work on her acting career.
