For his leading role in that film, he won the Best Actor award at Cannes. In the United States, Brandauer is best known for his memorable role as Meryl Streep's neer-do-well husband in "Out of Africa" for which he was given an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Born Klaus Maria Stenji, he was educated at the Stuttgart Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Germany. Upon graduation, he began working in repertory theater in well-known companies such as Tubingen and Dusseldorf until he was hired into the troupe at Burgtheater in Vienna, one of Austria's best known theaters.
