Director, Screenwriter Born: December 10, 1935 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia Death: October 24, 2001 Biography:Czech director and screenwriter "Jaromil Jires" makes films in a variety of genres. His most important contribution to his country's cinema was "Perlicky N Dne"/"Pearls of the Deep" (1965), a seminal work that has been called the "manifesto" of the Czech New Wave. Jires originally studied film administration at the Industrial Film School at Cimelice; he went on to study at Prague's FAMU, where he received degrees in photography in 1958, and film direction in 1960.
