Born Helmut Steinberger in Salzburg, Austria, but raised in Stuttgart, Germany, Berger learned to act at the University of Perugia in Italy and started out in English and French television commercials. He first worked in movies as an extra until he was discovered by Italian director "Luchino Visconti" and given the lead in his controversial, powerhouse drama The Damned (1969). From there he found steady employment in European and occasionally American films. In the U.S., Berger spent a season on television nighttime soap "Dynasty".
