Ray Winstone Ray
Winstone made his mark as a tough guy in one of his first starring roles, as a
brutalized reform school kid who turns major, hard-as-nails criminal in the
appropriately titled "Scum" (1979). He appeared in a lot of impressive British
television, but furthered
... morehis fame stateside via his remarkable roles in such
terrific movies as "Sexy Beast," "Nil by Mouth" and "The Proposition." An amateur boxer, Winstone carries the
bruised, barrel-chested, working-class appeal of old school Brits like Oliver Reed, making him perfect as a gangster thug in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed" and as Indiana Jones' sidekick Mac in Steven Spielberg's disappointing "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Blessed
with a notably distinct, gravelly voice, he was both a perfect and interesting
choice as lead in the blockbuster, 3-D interpretation of the Old English epic
poem "Beowulf." Though he was barely recognizable as the famous
warrior, made more muscular through performance-capture technology, we'll take
Winstone and his voice any way we can. (Steve Ross/Capital Pictures/Retna
