By Season 8, the show was more than halfway done with its run, but some
wondered if it was already time to retire. As new chief resident, Dr. Chen made
poor choices, "Dr. Dave" Malucci (Erik Palladino) hammed it up, and Benton became a
single father. Meanwhile, Abby and
... more Kovac had romantic troubles, and she drifted
toward Carter, until Susan Lewis returned to start some extremely bland
flirting. Michael Gallant (Sharif Atkins) was earnest, and Kerry
Weaver met the woman (Lisa Vidal) for her. By the end of
this season, Benton was gone and Greene was dead. Guest stars included Julie Delpy, Mary McDonnell and Michael Gross. And, oh! Mark Greene was as tested as
Job, with a stressed marriage, a newborn and that pesky brain tumor. And then
his moody teen (Hallee Hirsh) showed up. There was nothing to dislike about
sweet, bland Mark, but his suffering was so drawn out, we were all hoping he'd
hurry up and die already. And finally, in "On the Beach," he did.
