Best Mutt: Charlie Dog in "Awful Orphan" and "Often an Orphan" (1949)

Marc Anthony the bulldog has greater emotional range (his seven-minute tour-de-force performance in Chuck Jones' 1952 "Feed the Kitty" will leave you as wrung out as "Sophie's Choice"), Droopy exhibits killer... more deadpan timing, and Sparky the Gay Dog exudes a noble pathos, but Charlie Dog is the embodiment of All-American can-do mutt-ism. He's a pointer ("There it is! There it is! There it is!"), an outdoor enthusiast ("I'm gonna sleep in a slee-pin' bag, I'm gonna have rosy chee-eeks!"), and of proudly mixed, melting-pot heritage: "Fifty percent collie! Fifty percent Irish setter! Fifty percent boxer! Fifty percent Doberman pinscher! But, mostly, I'm all Labrador retriever!"

His attitude is 50 percent wise guy, 50 percent con man and 100 percent confident. And he talks like Mel Blanc with a Brooklyn accent. Funny. Charlie has two simple goals: 1) to find himself a master; and 2) to master his master -- which, if your mark is Porky Pig, is eminently doable. (Warner Bros.)
