Marisa Tomei
Best
Supporting Actress: "My Cousin Vinny"
(1992)
As any fan of "In the Bedroom" can attest, Marisa Tomei is a fine actress. She's
funny, sexy, cute and, quite simply, a natural. So why is the Oscar curse
frequently attributed to her? Well, there's the first,
time-old reason -- she
never became the huge star the award was supposed to produce. The more popular
theory is based on rumor. Though it may all be urban legend, many claim that
Tomei's Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "My Cousin Vinny" was one huge mistake
on the part of presenter Jack Palance. The other talented
nominees up for the award (Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Judy Davis and Vanessa Redgrave), were, allegedly, slighted after
Palance read the wrong name and the gaffe was too embarrassing to change. Not
wanting to rain on the absolutely shocked Tomei's parade and not wanting to
admit fault, rumor has it they said, "Aww ... let her have it." As Palance would
say, "Believe it, or not" ...
