Joan Rivers, 75, June
8: Can we talk? Rivers was a pioneering stand-up comedian in the '60s,
when few women dared to try to join the men's club. She did it with her
signature self-deprecation, which delighted Ed Sullivan and, later, Johnny Carson, who would become a mentor --
... moreuntil she
launched a competing talk show, which ultimately failed. In recent years
she's appeared as a red-carpet commentator for awards shows (but her bleepable
comments about Russell Crowe got her banned from E!), in
commercials, and in her charitable endeavors, and she sells a line of jewelry on
QVC. Oh, and she may have had a little work done.
