Few rock icons are more familiar than Jim Morrison -- the poster
boy/cautionary tale of '60s excess. But Morrison was part of a band, and the
band was responsible for the music that made him a dark star. It's one of the
great pop conundrums: A group needs a charismatic ... more leader to get noticed, but
what's a leader without a group to lead? Like many bands, the Doors had a
handsome front man with poetic aspirations. Like few bands, they had a heavy
jazz influence and no bass player. But like all bands people love forever, their
songs were instant classics.
