RED QUEEN:Nicole Kidman, 79th Annual Academy Awards, 2007
When Nicole Kidman first turned up on cinematic radar, her face, with its
peaches-and-cream complexion, was haloed by a mane of tight red-gold curls. She
looked like a Pre-Raphaelite beauty, fairly electrified by
... morepassion. (In "The
Portrait of a Lady," director Jane Campion contrasted Kidman's
crown of wired cherry-red hair with the tamed, dark braids and twists she wears
when her youthful innocence and zest for life dead-end.) On the way to becoming
a movie star, that magnificent mane has been straightened to a fare-thee-well,
so that Kidman's blonded coifs always look slightly unnatural, contributing to
the actress' tendency toward bloodless ice-queen. The tall (5'10") redhead
complains that she has "a boy's body. I would prefer to have more curves because
I think that's more beautiful. I would love to have boobs and a butt like Jennifer Lopez but I'm not having surgery so there it
is." Doubt that J.Lo could generate such slow-rising heat as Kidman does in
Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut," sharing a sexual fantasy while wearing the
skimpiest of undies. Or carry off with such imperious confidence the scarlet
Balenciaga gown -- a body-hugging number with oversized ribbon-train -- Nicole
