"Benny & Joon" (1993):Jeremiah Chechik's sentimental story of an adorable
but erratic mentally ill young woman (Mary Stuart Masterson), her fiercely protective big
brother (Aidan Quinn), and the sweetly eccentric oddball
(Depp), is so syrupy and sticky that it may cause sugar... more shock in some viewers.
Any similarity between the cute antics and rosy prospects of these fun-loving
grown children and the real world of the mentally ill is coincidental, but the
cast almost makes you believe in it, especially Depp's out-of-time silent movie
clown. His brilliant recreation of Charlie Chaplin slapstick and Buster Keaton deadpan is some of the most impressive
physical comedy seen on-screen since the silent era. It borders on comic ballet.
