age 88: Arthur Penn helped shape the great new age of American
filmmaking. "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), with its unapologetic climactic violence,
is widely recognized as ushering in a new era of dark, edgy, younger-skewing
films. Earlier he had a hit with ... more1962's "The Miracle Worker" (he had directed
the stage production as well), and he later continued his momentum with "Alice's
Restaurant," "Little Big Man," "Night Moves" and "The Missouri Breaks." Of
"Bonnie and Clyde," he once said, "I thought that if we're going to show this
(violence), we should show it. We should show what it looks like when somebody
gets shot." American film would never be the same.
