What really happened (we think): Whether you think it
glorifies pimping or not, the movie the song is from, "Hustle & Flow,"
got a rep as a likable indie underdog pretty early into its summer theatrical
run and was a solid sleeper hit. It was also an extremely thin year for the
competition. Only two other songs were nominated: the wet-noodle-ish "In the
Deep," from "Crash," an award for which would have looked like special pleading;
and a meh Dolly Parton tune from the little-seen "Transamerica." Some people
must have also thought that an Oscar win for a rap ensemble would make for an
awesome Oscar moment. That hunch was correct: The exuberant winners were the hit
of the night.
