| If Geeks Ran the Oscars: 2012 |
Which movies will dominate the Academy Awards this month? Who cares? Here's how the show would look if we picked all the nominees By Don Kaye While the "official" Academy Awards on February 26th will most likely shower golden statuettes on a mock silent film that's large on novelty value and rather thin on substance or originality, we here at Parallel Universe have different ideas. For the third year in a row, we're doing the "Geek Oscars," in which the films, performers and other creative personnel who choose to work in the genres of horror and science fiction (and to a lesser extent, fantasy and comic book films) get the nominations they often so richly deserve but hardly ever have bestowed on them. As with a handful of last year's nominees, like "Inception" and "Black Swan," there may be crossover here from the mainstream world and vice versa. That's okay; sometimes they let our little genres sit at the adult table via an undeniable performance (Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight") or a director's sheer will in getting the damn thing made. But look for less of that this year as we introduce the 2012 Academy Awards...for geeks.
