How the Academy Awards would look if movie nerds ran the show

Yes, it's that time again: As the rest of the movie industry, the media and
film fans all over the world prepare to watch "Lincoln" scarf up most of the
little gold men at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, we've got something else
in mind. Welcome to Parallel Universe's fourth annual Geek Oscars, in which the
films, performers and creative personnel who choose to work in the genres of
horror and science fiction (and, to a lesser extent, fantasy and comic book
films) get the nominations they often so richly deserve but hardly ever have
bestowed on them.

As always, there may be crossover here from the mainstream world and vice
versa. That's OK; sometimes they let our little genres sit at the adult
table via an undeniable performance or a director's sheer vision and successful
execution. But look for less of that this year at the Kodak Theater, while in
the meantime we introduce the 2013 Academy Awards ... for geeks.
