49. 'Forrest Gump'

Who doesn't recall a famous quote from this timeless classic? The words of
Forrest Gump, a simpleton who stumbles into fame and fortune, struck a
chord with America as we watched his incredible life unfold on the big screen.
We were there to bear witness as he taught Elvis to dance, became a college
football star, served with honor in Vietnam, met with JFK, defeated the
Chinese national team in table tennis, discovered the break-in at Watergate and
became very, very wealthy through investing in "some kind of fruit company." We
laughed, cried and saw that, truly, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never
know what you're gonna get."
Superbly acted, directed and written — and accompanied by a phenomenal
soundtrack — it was the movie to beat at the 67th Academy Awards -- nominated in
13 categories and winning 6. Tom Hanks earned his second consecutive Best Actor
award following his big win with "Philadelphia."

The journey we take with each character -- from Lieutenant Dan losing
his legs and being rescued by Forrest during the Vietnam War to seeing Jenny
spiral into self-destruction during the hippie movement and into a sleazy
portrayal of the '70s -- teaches us we can triumph in the midst of peril.
Even if we're not the brightest bulb on the shelf.
And that's all I have to say about that. — Lauren Choi, MSN Movies
